What to Do With Items That Cannot Be Donated

A Practical Decluttering Guide for Pasadena, Ventura, and Thousand Oaks

When people begin decluttering their homes, they often plan to donate as much as possible. Donating useful items is a great way to help others and keep things out of landfills.

But during the process, most people eventually run into items that donation centers cannot accept.

You might find yourself wondering:

Where can I recycle electronics?
What should I do with broken furniture?
How do I dispose of paint or hazardous items?

If you live in Pasadena, La Canada, Ventura, Thousand Oaks, or nearby communities, there are several responsible ways to handle items that cannot be donated.

Why Some Items Cannot Be Donated

Donation organizations work hard to resell or redistribute items, but they do have limits. Items are usually declined if they are broken, unsafe, or require special disposal.

Common examples include:

Broken furniture
Electronics that no longer work
Hazardous household items like paint or chemicals
Mattresses
Appliances that cannot be tested or repaired

When donation is not possible, recycling or specialized disposal programs are often the best next step.

Electronics and E-Waste

Electronics should generally not be thrown in the regular trash because they contain materials that need specialized recycling.

Common examples include:

Computers
Printers
Televisions
Gaming systems
Small electronics

It is a little known fact that most Goodwill locations accept electronics waste! We find the simplest way of getting rid of our e-waste is simply to drop them off at a local Goodwill.

If you’re in Ventura, Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station also accepts computers, electronics, and e-waste.

In Thousand Oaks, Hollywood Storage Center offers free, responsible electronic recycling through their partner, G&C Electronics Recycling. Come into the lobby anytime between 8:30 am and 6 pm, seven days a week. They'll let you know where to unload your materials for recycling.

Hazardous Household Items

Certain household materials require special disposal because they can be dangerous if placed in the trash.

Examples include:

Paint
Motor oil
Cleaning chemicals
Batteries
Pesticides

Most cities and counties offer hazardous waste collection programs where you can drop off your hazardous items and they can be safely disposed of. Check with your local sanitation company or city website for more details.

In Los Angeles county, you can utilize the S.A.F.E. centers for free hazardous waste dropoff, which are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. You can find the S.A.F.E. center locations below:

Hazardous Household Items Pickup Services

If you’d like to keep things simple and efficient, you can set up a paid pickup through the company Haz Away Today. Several of our clients have used them to safely and easily dispose of chemicals and paint gathered from organizing their homes and garages, and reported back that they were thrilled with the service! Here is a list of materials they remove, and here are the areas they service, including Los Angeles County, Ventura County, Santa Barbara County, and beyond.

And if you’re a resident of Thousand Oaks, you’re in luck because residents of Thousand Oaks can also schedule a FREE pickup of household hazardous waste through Athens Services

Large Furniture and Bulky Items

Large items that cannot be donated can sometimes be handled through municipal bulky item pickup programs or junk removal services.

Examples include:

Broken furniture
Old mattresses
Large appliances
Damaged shelving or cabinets

Many sanitation companies offer free or low cost bulky item pickup. For example, all residents of La Cañada Flintridge can participate in two free citywide bulky item pickups per year, one in May and one in November. Items eligible for pickup include any large items like furniture or appliances, as well as electronic waste and bundled or tied (not bagged) green waste. Residents are also able to call for two additional “on-call” bulky item pickups per year at no charge (call your waste hauler for more information).

If you do not want to deal with moving items to the curb or waiting for scheduled bulky item pickup, local hauling companies can make the process much easier. Many offer same-day or next-day service and aim to donate or recycle items whenever possible.

Here are a couple of our favorite hauling companies in Pasadena and Ventura:

Go Junk Free America. Their service area includes Los Angeles County, most of Ventura County, and Orange County. They also include their pricing on their website, which we love!

Another great resource is Junk Luggers of Hollywood. A huge bonus is that they also will take E-waste recycling, which many other hauling companies won’t.

Worn Clothing and Textiles

Many people assume clothing must be in perfect condition to donate, but that is not always true.

Organizations like Goodwill of Southern California sort clothing donations and attempt to sell them in their stores. If items do not sell, they may be sent to outlet locations or textile recycling systems where the materials can be repurposed into products like industrial rags.

However, clothing that is extremely damaged or unsanitary may still be declined.
